Sponsored Listings (OTA Advertising)

Sponsored Listings are paid placements on an OTA's search results in which a property pays extra, usually as a percentage of the booking or per click, to appear higher in rankings or in highlighted positions. They are labelled as "Sponsored", "Ad" or similar and sit alongside organic results.

OTAs such as Expedia Group (Expedia Media Solutions, Sponsored Listings), Booking.com (Ranking Booster-style and Visibility programs) and others offer variants, which have become a significant revenue stream beyond base commission.

How they are priced

  • Commission uplift: the hotel raises its commission, for example from 15% to 20%, in exchange for a ranking boost. Cost is incurred only on completed stays.
  • Cost per click: the hotel bids and pays per click, whether or not a booking follows. See CPC (Cost per Click) and Bid Modifier (Metasearch Bidding).
  • Cost per acquisition: payment is tied to bookings generated; see CPA (Cost per Acquisition).

Example

A hotel earns 120 OTA bookings a month at 15% commission on EUR 150 average value. With sponsored placement at 20%, bookings rise to 170. Incremental commission is higher, but the key question is the marginal cost: extra commission on all bookings versus the 50 additional room nights gained.
