Conversion Rate
Conversion Rate is the percentage of website visitors (or OTA listing viewers) who complete a booking. It is the most direct measure of how effectively a property turns demand into revenue.
Formula
Conversion Rate = (Bookings / Sessions) × 100
Typical benchmarks
Conversion rates vary widely by traffic source and segment, but rough hotel benchmarks include:
- Brand website (direct) — 2–4% on desktop, 1–2% on mobile
- Booking.com listing page — varies enormously by listing quality and rate competitiveness
- Metasearch click-through traffic — typically 1–3%
- Email campaigns to past guests — 5–10% or higher
What drives conversion
- Rate competitiveness vs OTAs and the comp set
- Content quality — images, descriptions, reviews
- Booking flow UX — fewer steps, fast load, mobile-friendly
- Trust signals — loyalty perks, free cancellation, member rates
- Price display — total price upfront vs surprise fees at checkout
Why it matters
Even a small conversion lift compounds dramatically. Doubling brand-website conversion from 2% to 4% effectively doubles direct revenue without spending another dollar on traffic acquisition — which is why direct-booking strategy is as much about UX optimization as it is about marketing.
