OpenTravel Alliance (OpenTravel)
OpenTravel Alliance (OpenTravel) is a non-profit, member-driven organization that develops and maintains open, XML-based message specifications used to exchange travel and hospitality data between trading partners. Founded in 1999, OpenTravel publishes a freely available schema library that standardizes how systems describe and transmit information such as room availability, rates, reservations, and guest profiles — allowing hotels, OTAs, channel managers, central reservation systems, and global distribution systems to integrate without inventing a custom data format for every connection.
How it works
OpenTravel defines a common vocabulary and message structure (for example OTA_HotelAvailRQ/OTA_HotelAvailRS request and response pairs) that two systems agree to speak. Rather than each vendor building bespoke point-to-point integrations, partners map their internal data once to the OpenTravel schema, dramatically reducing the cost and time of connecting new distribution channels.
Example
A channel manager that already supports OpenTravel messaging can onboard a new OTA partner by mapping to the partner's OpenTravel implementation, instead of writing an entirely new proprietary API connector. The hotel's availability and rate updates then flow to the OTA using the same standardized message envelope used across its other connections.
Why it matters
Distribution complexity grows with every new channel a hotel adds. Shared standards like OpenTravel lower the barrier to connectivity, improve data consistency across systems, and reduce mapping errors that cause overbookings or rate discrepancies. While newer JSON and REST-based standards have emerged, OpenTravel remains widely referenced in hospitality distribution, and many legacy connections between PMSs, CRSs, and OTAs still rely on its schemas.
