Bid Modifier (Metasearch Bidding)
Bid Modifier is an adjustment applied to a base cost-per-click or commission bid on a metasearch or paid channel, raising or lowering what a property pays for traffic in specific segments. Segments include device, country of origin, length of stay, booking window, rate plan or check-in date.
Formula
Effective bid = Base bid × (1 + Modifier %)
Example
A hotel bids €0.60 per click on a metasearch engine. It sets +25% for mobile users from its top source market and -30% for stays booked less than a day ahead, which convert poorly. The effective bids are €0.75 and €0.42. Where the channel bids by commission, the same logic applies to the percentage.
Why it matters
- Efficiency: spend moves towards segments with higher conversion rates and better ROAS.
- Demand alignment: bids can rise for compressed dates and fall for dates already sold out.
- Control of acquisition cost: modifiers keep CPA within target by segment.
- Direct versus OTA: it lets a property compete for direct bookings in metasearch without overpaying for traffic it would win anyway.
Caveats
Modifiers need enough data per segment to be reliable. Over-segmentation leads to thin data and noisy decisions, and available modifier types differ by platform.
