Airbnb's 2026 Summer Trends: Playcations, Rural Retreats, and Gen Z Heading Off the Beaten Path
Airbnb's annual summer travel trends report points to a season defined by activity-first trips, value-seeking behaviour, and a renewed appetite for less-travelled destinations — patterns that have direct implications for where short-term rental demand will concentrate over July and August.
Playcations on the Rise
The standout trend is what Airbnb is calling "playcations" — trips organised around a specific sport or outdoor activity rather than a place. Listings near golf courses, lakefronts, and surf breaks are seeing some of the fastest booking growth on the platform. Emerging domestic surf spots in North Carolina (Holden Beach, Nags Head, Kill Devil Hills) and golf-focused destinations with natural backdrops (Ann Arbor, MI; Cheyenne, WY; Victor, ID) are outperforming more traditional beach markets.
Value and Proximity
A third of summer travellers surveyed say they are choosing to stay closer to home this summer, driven by a mix of cost consciousness and a desire to explore overlooked destinations nearby. Rural retreats are benefitting from this shift, with Airbnb noting that countryside and small-town listings are offering competitive pricing relative to resort markets.
Gen Z's Summer Destinations
Gen Z travellers are gravitating toward two clusters. In Southeast Asia, Thailand's Surat Thani is emerging as a budget-friendly base for island hopping to Koh Samui and Koh Phangan. In Europe, lesser-known Greek islands — particularly Folegandros and Lefkada with its turquoise lagoons — are attracting younger travellers as alternatives to over-touristed Santorini and Mykonos.
Echoes of 2016
Airbnb also flagged a "rediscovering 2016 destinations" pattern, where cities that peaked as travel hotspots roughly a decade ago are resurging — likely as travellers seek familiar but affordable options without the premium now attached to newer must-see destinations.
Why It Matters
For operators and hosts, the playcation trend suggests that proximity to activity infrastructure (trails, courses, surf breaks) is a more potent demand driver this summer than proximity to traditional tourist sights. For investors watching Airbnb's trajectory, the report is also a signal about the breadth of inventory generating demand — the platform's rural and niche-activity supply is becoming a genuine differentiator from hotels and more urban-focused OTAs.
