CRS (Central Reservation System)
CRS (Central Reservation System) is the system that stores and distributes a hotel's rates, availability, and inventory (often called "ARI" data) across all sales channels. The CRS sits at the heart of a hotel's distribution stack, pushing data out to the brand website, OTAs, GDS, and metasearch engines.
Core functions
- Rate & inventory management — central store for rate plans, restrictions, and room availability
- Channel distribution — pushes ARI out to OTAs, GDS, metasearch, and the booking engine
- Reservation delivery — receives bookings from all channels and sends them to the PMS
- Loyalty & CRM integration — ties bookings to guest profiles
CRS vs PMS
The two are often confused, but they serve different roles:
- CRS — handles distribution, rates, and availability across all channels
- PMS — handles operations at the property (check-in, housekeeping, folios)
Why chains use a CRS
Hotel chains and brands rely on a CRS to maintain consistent rates and inventory across hundreds or thousands of properties, enforce brand standards, and power brand.com bookings at scale. Leading CRS providers include SynXis (Sabre), Pegasus, TravelClick (Amadeus), and Windsurfer.
