Consortia

Consortia are networks of independent travel agencies that band together to negotiate preferred hotel rates, commissions, and amenities on behalf of their member agents. Well-known examples include Virtuoso, Signature Travel Network, Internova (Travel Leaders), and American Express Travel's programs. A hotel joins a consortia program during an annual RFP cycle, agreeing to a negotiated rate — often around 10% off BAR with last room availability — plus agent commission (typically 10%) and value-adds such as breakfast, upgrades, or credits. The rates are then bookable by member agents, usually through the GDS under dedicated rate access codes.

Consortia business is concentrated in the luxury and upper-upscale segments and in corporate-adjacent leisure travel, where advisors book high-value stays for repeat clients.

Example

A luxury resort participates in a leading consortia program. Member agents book a rate of BAR minus 10% with LRA, and their clients receive daily breakfast for two, a $100 property credit, and priority upgrades. The hotel pays 10% commission per booking plus an annual participation fee. In return it receives several hundred room nights a year at an ADR well above its OTA-sourced business, from guests with strong ancillary spend.

Why it matters

Consortia deliver a distinct, high-value demand segment that OTAs do not reach: advisor-driven luxury travelers who book longer stays, spend more on property, and rebook through the same agent. The channel's economics differ from OTA distribution — commission is comparable or lower, but participation fees, LRA commitments, and amenity costs must be weighed against the segment's higher total spend. For revenue managers, the annual consortia RFP season is a fixed point in the commercial calendar, and honoring LRA on negotiated rates is a recurring yield-management constraint during compression periods.
