Carbon per Room Night

Carbon per Room Night is a sustainability intensity metric that expresses a hotel's greenhouse gas emissions per occupied room night, usually in kilograms of CO₂ equivalent (kg CO₂e). It normalizes a property's total carbon footprint for size and occupancy, making hotels of different scales comparable and letting corporate clients and OTAs attribute emissions to an individual stay. The most widely used calculation standard is the Hotel Carbon Measurement Initiative (HCMI), developed by the Sustainable Hospitality Alliance and the World Travel & Tourism Council.

Formula

Carbon per Room Night = Total emissions from hotel operations (kg CO₂e) ÷ Occupied Room Nights

Under HCMI, the numerator covers energy consumed by the property (with an apportionment for meeting spaces), and outsourced laundry where relevant.

Example

A 120-room hotel emits 1,140 tonnes of CO₂e in a year and sells 60,000 room nights. Carbon per room night = 1,140,000 kg ÷ 60,000 = 19 kg CO₂e per room night. If the hotel cuts energy use 10% the following year at similar occupancy, the figure falls to roughly 17 kg — a comparable, reportable improvement.

Why it matters

Carbon per room night is becoming a commercial data point, not just an ESG one. Corporate RFPs increasingly require HCMI-based figures so travel buyers can report Scope 3 business-travel emissions. OTAs and travel programs use stay-level footprints to power sustainability filters and badges, and regulators are pushing large travel companies toward audited emissions disclosure. Hotels that cannot produce a credible number risk exclusion from corporate programs; hotels with a low one gain a bid advantage that has nothing to do with rate.
