Google AI Mode Now Books Hotels, and Independents Lost Free Ad Visibility

Independent hoteliers that relied on free Google inclusion may have lost visibility just as AI-driven booking arrived, according to a Hospitality Net brief.
Markus Busch of hospitality.today and reconline AG reports that on October 1, Google AI Mode began completing hotel bookings with ten major U.S. chains and OTAs. The same day, Google ended its price-feed mandate, which had required it to show independent hotel ads alongside OTA results (the brief's summary dates the end to September 30). Independents that did not pay for Hotel Ads or run a live price feed lost Google hotel visibility.
Agent tests
Terence Ronson of Pertlink tested Claude and ChatGPT across seven hotel groups. Marriott, IHG, Accor and Choice let agents proceed from search to checkout; Hyatt, Hilton and Wyndham gave inconsistent results. A failed booking at one property can send the traveler to a competitor's interface.
Where AI gets its answers
Are Morch analyzed 27,360 AI travel answers and found independent hotels eight times more likely than chain hotels to receive no AI mentions. Hotel websites supply 7% of what AI says about a property; 93% comes from OTA listings, review platforms and editorial media.
