Upselling

Upselling is the practice of persuading a guest to purchase a higher-value version of what they already booked — a better room category, a rate plan with more inclusions, or a longer stay — typically between booking confirmation and check-in, or at the front desk on arrival. It is distinct from cross-selling, which adds separate products (spa, parking, breakfast) rather than upgrading the core purchase.

How it works

Upselling happens at several points in the guest journey:

  • At booking — the booking engine or OTA presents room upgrades and premium rate plans alongside the selected option
  • Pre-arrival — automated emails or guest apps offer upgrades days before check-in, often at a discount to the walk-in upgrade price
  • At check-in — front desk agents offer available upgrades, frequently supported by incentive schemes
  • During the stay — in-stay platforms offer late check-out, room moves, or extended nights

Pre-arrival upselling has become a technology category of its own, with platforms using availability data and guest profiles to price and target upgrade offers automatically.

Example

A guest books a standard double at €120 per night for 3 nights. Two days before arrival, an automated email offers a junior suite upgrade for €25 per night. The guest accepts, adding €75 in room revenue. Because the suite would likely have gone unsold, the incremental cost is minimal and the revenue flows through at a high margin.

Why it matters

Upsell revenue is commission-free even when the original booking came through an OTA — the upgrade transaction happens directly between hotel and guest. It converts distressed premium inventory into revenue, raises ADR without touching public pricing, and measurably improves guest satisfaction when the offer is relevant. For many properties, a structured upsell program adds 2–5% to room revenue with little incremental cost.
