Allegiant flights are coming to Expedia. The two companies announced a strategic partnership on July 14 that makes Expedia Group the first online travel agency ever authorized to sell Allegiant flights. For hotels and rental operators in Allegiant's leisure-heavy network, that opens a new booking channel worth watching.

The deal is a 12-month exclusive. It covers Allegiant's full nonstop network of 566 routes across 124 US cities and puts that inventory on all of Expedia Group's US brands, including Expedia, Hotels.com and Vrbo. With Allegiant added, Expedia Group says it now offers coverage of every US commercial passenger carrier.

"Partnering with Allegiant is a significant milestone for Expedia Group as we continue to build the most complete and trusted travel marketplace," said Golan Shakéd, Vice President, Hotel Management Partnerships and Air at Expedia Group. "With Allegiant now available across our brands, travelers can shop every U.S. carrier in one place, making it easier to compare options and book with confidence."

Allegiant's chief commercial officer Drew Wells called it "a meaningful step in our distribution evolution."

Why this is a bigger deal than it sounds

Allegiant built its low-cost model on selling direct. For years the airline kept OTAs at arm's length, steering travelers to its own website where it could sell seat upgrades, bags, hotel packages and car rentals without paying distribution fees. Unauthorized listings on third-party sites were something the airline actively fought, not welcomed.

Signing an authorized OTA deal is a clear shift in that strategy. The 12-month term suggests both sides are treating it as a test. If Expedia delivers enough incremental demand to outweigh the cost of distribution, expect a longer arrangement. If not, Allegiant can walk away.

The scale behind the deal has also grown. According to the release, Allegiant now operates both Allegiant Air and Sun Country Airlines, serving roughly 22 million customers a year across more than 650 routes.

What it means for operators

Allegiant's network is built around connecting smaller, underserved US cities to vacation destinations like Las Vegas, Florida and Phoenix. Until now, those travelers mostly booked flights on Allegiant's own site, where Allegiant sold them its own hotel packages.

With Allegiant flights inside Expedia, Hotels.com and Vrbo, those same travelers can build their full trip in one place. Properties in Allegiant-served destinations may see more demand flow through Expedia Group channels, including flight-plus-hotel packages that were previously out of reach for this traffic.

If your market has an Allegiant route, it is worth checking that your Expedia Group listings, rates and content are in good shape. A new pool of leisure travelers just got easier access to them.
