Airbnb Widens Engineers' Access to OpenAI Models, Says Teams Ship About 80% More Features

Airbnb's pace of product change affects every host on the platform, and the company says AI tooling is now a main reason that pace has picked up.
Under a new agreement announced Wednesday, Airbnb's engineering and product development teams get broader access to OpenAI's frontier models, including GPT-6 Astra. Access runs through OpenAI's APIs and through Amazon Bedrock on AWS, which Airbnb calls its preferred cloud provider.
What Airbnb already uses
Airbnb engineers work on an internal AI tooling platform to write software and to build remote AI agents, powered by models including Codex and GPT-5.6 Sol, Terra and Luna. The company says its early work with GPT-6 Astra has helped engineers track down difficult bugs, shape system designs and think through engineering approaches.
"Our development teams are shipping roughly 80% more features than a year ago," said Ahmad Al-Dahle, Airbnb's chief technology officer. "OpenAI's frontier models, including GPT-6 Astra, are a key element of our developer tooling that helps us keep that momentum going and build better products faster."
Dali Rajic, OpenAI's chief revenue officer, said expanded access gives Airbnb's teams "even more powerful tools to move from ideas to production faster."
Beyond engineering
Airbnb says it also uses OpenAI models across the marketplace in:
- Search, to understand what guests are looking for
- Fraud prevention, flagging potentially fraudulent content and claims
- Guest and host support, including when travel plans change
- Insurance claims, to get hosts their payouts faster
The company tied the deal to its plan to bring more of the trip into one app, spanning homes, services, experiences, airport pickups and car rentals.
Context
The announcement came the same day CEO Brian Chesky told Skift Global Forum that Airbnb will launch its own AI agent in 2027. Airbnb has also said it shipped more than 600 features this year. For hosts, the signal is that search, support and claims handling are all running on models Airbnb is actively upgrading, so changes in those areas are likely to keep coming at a faster rate.
