Airbnb to Give Large Hosts and Guests Temporary Phone Numbers From October 30

Airbnb will start masking guest phone numbers for large hosts and property managers in the U.S. and Canada on October 30. If you connect through property management software, you will no longer see your guests' real numbers.
The temporary numbers handle calls and texts from the time of booking until two days after checkout. After that, calls go to Airbnb support, which decides whether to pass on a real number. Airbnb began testing the system with a small group of hosts and guests in December 2025.
The masking only applies when the listing is in the U.S. or Canada, and both the host and the guest live there with local registered phone numbers. For other reservations, hosts connected through the API can still find guest numbers on Airbnb.
There are limits. The temporary numbers do not support WhatsApp, photo sharing or group texts. Airbnb says the change protects privacy and supports safe interactions, and it points hosts to its own messaging system for anything else.
Managers are not all convinced. Skift reports that some say guests often ignore Airbnb messaging, which leaves gaps for damage claims, forgotten items and legal matters. James Smith, CEO of InvitedHome, called it a way for Airbnb to control the guest relationship and revenue, and pointed to a $20,000 garage door repair as a case where a profile alone may not be enough. Merilee Karr of Under the Doormat Group said rules built for amateur hosts are being applied to professional operators, just as Airbnb expands into hotels where direct contact and registration are standard.
Operators are already adjusting. Evolve in Denver has told hosts it will share guest contact numbers before check-in. It has also warned that door codes based on the last four digits of a guest's phone number will stop working.
For property managers, the practical steps are simple. Check any check-in flow that depends on a guest's real number, switch door code logic if needed, and make sure guests know how to reach you through Airbnb messaging.
