Toyota City prepares for a surge in tourism ahead of the autumn multi-sport event.

Event-driven demand rarely stays in the headline city. Agoda's numbers for Japan's autumn multi-sport event show how far it travels — and how much lead time a small-town operator gets.

Agoda analysed accommodation searches for the 19 September to 4 October event window across Aichi Prefecture, and published the results on 3 September 2026.

Where the searches are going

By raw search volume, Nagoya City is the most-searched host city, followed by Toyota City, Toyohashi City, Okazaki City and Ichinomiya City. The full top ten adds Kariya, Kasugai, Komaki, Nishio and Shinshiro.

Nagoya's lead is unsurprising: it hosts water polo, athletics, basketball, judo, football, rugby sevens, gymnastics and tennis, and offers food, shopping and sightseeing alongside the sport.

Where the growth is

Measured as growth against the three weeks before the event window, the ranking inverts:

  • Toyota City — up 715%
  • Ichinomiya City — up 504% (hosting badminton)
  • Kariya City — up 324% (hosting football)
  • Okazaki City — up 237%

The pattern points to demand spilling out of the main host city into secondary towns that would not normally register on an international booking curve.

Source markets

Taiwan generated the highest search volume into the host cities, followed by South Korea, Hong Kong, the Philippines and China.

On growth, China leads at 724%, with the Philippines at 249%. Agoda attributes the Chinese figure to awareness carried over from the previous edition in Hangzhou, expectations around the national team, and an event window overlapping the Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day holidays. Philippine interest is linked to the men's basketball team defending the title it won at the previous edition — its first gold in 61 years.

Comment

Tadashi Ikai, Senior Country Director at Agoda International Japan, framed it as a discovery effect: "It's especially exciting to see heightened interest in lesser-known cities like Toyota City, Ichinomiya City, and Kariya City in Aichi Prefecture."

He added that "sports tourism can offer travelers an opportunity to discover destinations they may not have visited before, while experiencing the unique attractions, cuisine, and culture each area has to offer."

Why it matters

Search data leads booking data. For properties in the secondary host cities, a 500–700% jump in searches three weeks out is the window in which rate and length-of-stay restrictions still change the outcome — and the point at which international source-market mix, in this case heavily Taiwanese, Korean and Chinese, should be driving channel and content decisions.
