Sponsored Listings Are OTAs' New Revenue Line. An AI Booking Agent Says It Ignores Them.

Hosts are being asked to pay for visibility on OTAs just as a new kind of customer, the AI agent, may not look at visibility at all. Skift's executive editor Dennis Schaal set out the tension in a 22 September analysis.
Sponsored listings are scaling
- Vrbo has launched auction-based sponsored listings. Vacation rentals pay per booking for premium placement in search results. Skift reports that pilot partners averaged roughly 40% booking growth and a 39% revenue increase.
- The product feeds Expedia's advertising business, which generated $197 million in the first quarter, up 13% year over year.
- Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky, speaking at a Goldman Sachs conference, called sponsored listings "a pretty easy straight shot to $1 billion incremental high margin revenue."
The agent problem
Skift's point is that an AI agent can scan an OTA's results page in one pass and may not care, as a human would, which listing is featured most prominently.
Personal booking agents are arriving quickly. Skift cites Instinct from Spear Street Technology, reportedly valued at $2.5 billion, and Meta's newly launched Muse.
Asked directly, Instinct told Skift that paid placement is not a signal it uses. It said it defaults to booking direct with hotels and airlines, skipping OTA merchandising.
Paid placement may move, not disappear
Skift suggests the model could adapt, with OTAs and suppliers paying to be surfaced to the agents themselves. It notes that ChatGPT is already testing sponsored agents. Expedia and Booking Holdings did not immediately respond to Skift's request for comment.
Why it matters
For hosts and property managers weighing a sponsored-listings budget, the returns reported today come from human browsing behaviour. That is a reasonable basis for spend in 2026, but it is worth tracking conversion by channel as agent-driven traffic grows. If agents skip the ranking layer and go direct, the quality of a property's own direct-booking setup and structured content becomes more valuable than its position on an OTA results page.
