Genius (Booking.com loyalty program)

Genius is Booking.com's loyalty and discount program for travelers. Members get discounted rates and additional perks at participating properties, while properties opt in to offer those discounts in exchange for higher visibility and ranking on the platform.

How it works for guests

Guests automatically become Genius members after completing a small number of stays through Booking.com (the threshold has changed over time). The program has multiple levels:

  • Level 1 — typically 10% off at participating properties, plus free perks like room upgrades, breakfast, or early check-in
  • Level 2 — 15% off plus additional perks
  • Level 3 — 20% off plus the highest-tier perks

How it works for hotels

Properties opt in by agreeing to fund the discount themselves — Booking.com doesn't pay for it. In exchange:

  • Genius rates are flagged with a Genius badge on listings
  • Properties get higher ranking in Genius-member search results
  • Properties qualify for additional marketing exposure within the program

Why it's controversial

Genius is one of the most-debated OTA programs in hospitality. Critics argue:

  • It compresses hotel margins on already-commissioned bookings
  • It complicates rate parity by creating a logged-in discount that the hotel can't match elsewhere without violating other parity agreements
  • Opting out can mean losing significant search visibility on Booking.com

Supporters point to the volume the program generates and the loyalty value of repeat Genius bookers.
