Booking.com Brings Car Rental Search to ChatGPT and Launches Three AI Tools for the Road Trip Season
Sarah
Booking.com has integrated car rental search into its ChatGPT app and launched three AI-powered tools designed to reduce the friction that makes car rentals one of travel's most complaint-heavy categories.
The announcements, made May 20, cover the full rental journey: finding a car through ChatGPT, getting questions answered after booking, reading condensed supplier reviews, and filtering searches by specific vehicle features.
ChatGPT Integration
The Booking.com app in ChatGPT now handles car rentals. Users can describe what they need in plain language, for example an automatic SUV in Mallorca, and receive a shortlist of options. Clicking through hands them off to Booking.com to complete the reservation. The feature is available globally.
The ChatGPT integration matters for distribution: it places Booking.com's car inventory inside the chat interface where a growing number of travelers are beginning their trip planning, bypassing the traditional search-engine-to-OTA funnel.
AI Car Rental Helper
Booking.com's AI Car Rental Helper is a post-booking support tool that answers common questions about an existing reservation: payment methods, pick-up documentation, insurance coverage, and drop-off requirements. The company says early testing produced fewer customer service calls, fewer reservation changes, and fewer disrupted pick-ups, a meaningful metric given that car rental disputes are a disproportionate source of traveler complaints.
The Helper launched today in French, Spanish (including Catalan), German, Dutch, and Italian globally, plus English in the UK, US, Australia, New Zealand, and Singapore.
AI Review Summaries and Smart Search
Two further features address the booking stage. AI-generated review summaries replace scrolling through individual ratings: the tool surfaces recurring themes from recent reviews, covering service, cleanliness, location, and similar factors. Available in English in the UK, US, Australia, New Zealand, and Singapore, with additional languages to follow.
Smart Search adds granular filters to car rental results, letting travelers specify seat count, automatic transmission, or unlimited mileage. Booking.com says this reduces time spent scrolling past irrelevant listings. It is available in English globally.
"Car rentals remain an important part of many travel journeys," said Eve Henrikson, SVP of Trips at Booking.com. "With these latest AI-powered features, we aim to make it even easier for customers to both search and book car rentals and ensure they have a seamless experience when they pick up their car."
Booking.com cited its own survey data showing one in four travelers plans a road trip this year, with friction around confusing terms and unexpected pick-up requirements as recurring pain points. The suite of tools addresses that friction at each stage: discovery via ChatGPT, post-booking support via the Helper, supplier assessment via review summaries, and search refinement via Smart Search.
