Agoda Puts an AI Bot on the Room Selection Page, and a "Best Pick" Label With It

The future of room selection: AI at your fingertips.

An AI assistant now sits between Agoda travellers and the room grid, and it decides which room to put forward first. For properties that run a dozen rate plans across occupancy, board and cancellation terms, that changes who is doing the merchandising.

Agoda announced the Room Grid Bot on 17 August. It is a chat assistant inside the Agoda mobile app, reached from the room-selection page after a traveller taps "Select room" on a property page. A banner reading "Need help choosing a room? Let AI help you" opens the conversation without pushing the traveller off the page. The bot reads the traveller's existing search details, takes whatever preferences they type into the chat, and returns room recommendations inside the conversation rather than making them scroll the full grid.

Travellers can ask it for options with specific inclusions, free breakfast being the example Agoda gives, or ask property questions such as check-in times. The bot also flags one option as a "Best pick."

That label is the part worth sitting with. Agoda frames the launch around traveller confusion, and the confusion is real: room types and offers on a single property vary by occupancy, cancellation terms, meal inclusions and price, and comparing them by hand is tedious. But the fix hands a ranking decision to Agoda's model. A property no longer competes only on how its rate plans are priced and named, it competes on how legible those plans are to a chat assistant reading them. Rooms with vague names, unclear inclusions or inconsistent cancellation language are the ones most likely to be passed over when the bot builds its shortlist.

Agoda did not say how "Best pick" is determined, whether commission level, cancellation flexibility, conversion history or margin feed into it, or whether properties can see which of their rooms the bot is surfacing. Those are the questions a revenue manager would want answered before deciding whether this is a distribution change or just a search feature.

"Choosing a hotel is only part of the booking decision," said Idan Zalzberg, Chief Technology Officer at Agoda. "Travelers also need to find the right room for their trip, which can be challenging when many options are available. The Room Grid Bot helps narrow down those choices based on what travelers want and need, making it easier to identify and book the room that best suits their trip."

The Room Grid Bot is the third AI assistant Agoda has placed in the booking funnel. The Property AMA (Ask Me Anything) Bot answers accommodation-specific questions while travellers browse a property, and the Booking Form Bot handles questions at checkout. Room selection was the remaining gap between the two. Agoda now has a conversational layer at browse, at room choice and at payment, which means a growing share of what a guest learns about a property arrives through a model rather than through the listing itself.

Agoda lists over 6 million holiday properties, 130,000 flight routes and 300,000 activities across Agoda.com and its app. The Room Grid Bot is app-only at launch, with no stated timeline for desktop or mobile web.

The practical step for operators on Agoda is to audit how room types read to a machine: unambiguous names, explicit board and cancellation terms, and inclusions entered as structured fields rather than buried in free text. Whatever governs "Best pick," a room the assistant cannot parse is a room it cannot recommend.
